Kim Glas, President and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations (NCTO) alluded recently,“ The newly imposed tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada threaten a crucial textile and apparel coproduction chain with our two valued trade partners—one that sustains nearly 500,000 American jobs and a total of 1.6 million jobs across North America.
Destabilizing this production chain coupled with the de minimis loophole will only exacerbate migration and the fentanyl crisis.
We appreciate that President Trump has drawn much needed attention to these significant problems.
SWEEPING TARIFFS UNDERMINE ECONOMIC STABILITY FOR AMERICAN COMPANIES AND CONSUMERS.
The American Apparel & Footwear Association responds to 25 percent additional tariffs on virtually all U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico and 10 percent tariff on all U.S. imports from China (on top of existing extra tariffs).
"These new tariffs are compounding rapidly. Amid other hints at hitting hard on the EU and other allies as well, each HTS code of tariffs snowballs into a growing - and potentially crushing - burden on American businesses and hardworking American families.

Excessive employer influence is weakening worker safety protections in Bangladesh’s garment industry.
The research presented in the memorandum finds that strong employer influence has resulted in:
1) weakening of the programme’s mechanism used to enforce factory owners’ safety obligations, 2) the continuation of exports, including to Accord brand signatories, from factories terminated from the programme for failing to make mandated safety renovations, 3) delays in the implementation of a crucial programme to avert boiler explosions which have historically been a cause of injury and death for garment workers.
