Dr J V Rao recently presented a webinar on “Entrepreneurial Opportunities in BuildTech for MSMEs” to the members of the Textile Association of India (TAI), Delhi Unit.
The session focused on how BuildTech (technical textiles for construction) is emerging as a promising domain for MSMEs, driven by India’s rapid infrastructure growth and the increasing emphasis on performance, durability, sustainability and lifecycle efficiency in construction.

The presentation covered:
BuildTech Opportunities Areas
India is witnessing rapid growth in the construction of metros, airports, highways, public buildings, housing…Speed, durability, sustainability and lifecycle performance are essential in today’s construction works
Traditional construction relies largely on brick, concrete and steel, which are reaching their practical limits
BuildTech materials are emerging to address these new demands
The evolving role of technical textiles in construction
Why BuildTech is particularly suited for MSME-led innovation
Generally less capital-intensive than heavy construction materials
Enables customized and application-specific designs
Suitable for smaller production volumes and niche markets
Strong scope for system integration and innovation.
Where MSMEs Fit In BuildTech
MSMEs succeed best where products are specialized and not easily commoditized.
BuildTech offers many such opportunities — especially where fabrication, installation and application knowledge matter more than raw scale.
MSMEs can integrate materials into solutions rather than selling commodities.
This is the lens through which one has to shortlist the focus areas.
How BuildTech Textiles are different?
The Key performance drivers:
High strength–to–weight ratio
Durability and lifecycle economy (cost vs service life)
Structural performance and stability
Protection against fire, UV radiation, corrosion, moisture and water permeation…
Design flexibility using lightweight and formable materials
BuildTecch Material Landscape
List of BuildTech material categories:
Geotextiles & geosynthetics,
Fall protection safety nets, scaffolding & debris protection nets
Roofing & waterproofing textiles
Acoustic & insulation textiles
Facade & shading textiles
Textile-reinforced cementitious (TRC) systems
Tensile membrane structures
Emerging opportunity areas such as tensile membrane structures and textile-reinforced concrete (TRC)
The importance of collaboration between industry, research institutions, designers and entrepreneurs to mainstream these technologies
I am sharing the presentation here for the benefit of a wider audience, especially entrepreneurs, professionals, faculty, students and policymakers who are interested in next-generation construction materials and systems.
Market Demand & MSME opportunity
Demand is pan-India - all types of institutions, private developments...
Projects are repetitive and can be easily standardized.
Execution cycles are much faster than RCC.
This creates an attractive business case for MSMEs that can deliver consistent quality.
Dr Rao alluded inviting MSMEs, designers, consultants, researchers and students to explore opportunities in BuildTech, share experiences and collaborate in taking these emerging technologies from pilot projects to mainstream applications.
