Delivering the keynote address at the 4th Global Cotton Conference held yesterday in New Delhi, Dr M Beena IAS Textile Commissioner (Govt of India), conveyed a powerful message on the future of India’s cotton sector, coinciding with the celebration of World Cotton Day.
All of us are united by a shared purpose — to synergize our efforts and channel our energies towards strengthening India’s cotton ecosystem. For India, cotton is far more than an economic asset; it is part of our civilizational identity, deeply rooted in the legacy of the Indus Valley Civilization and the spirit of the freedom struggle.
Cotton and the charkha remain enduring symbols of Swadeshi and self-reliance — values we are once again bringing to the forefront through renewed campaigns to promote domestic production and consumption.
Today’s deliberations must focus on innovation and technology as the twin pillars driving the sector forward. As our Hon’ble Deputy Prime Minister aptly emphasized, “Innovate or perish—adapt technology or be left behind.”
Despite the complexities of fragmented farming, diverse seed varieties, and traditional practices, the government and industry are working together to overcome challenges and foster traceability, sustainability, and quality assurance. Initiatives such as the Vision on Cotton Productivity, TUFS evaluation, and PM MITRA Parks represent bold steps toward modernization and value-chain integration.
Ultimately, cotton is not just a crop—it is a shared goal, vision, and commitment. By converging the strengths of government, industry, and farmers, we can ensure that Indian cotton continues to symbolize resilience, innovation, and national pride.
