Ambitious Targets and Global Positioning
Pabitra Margherita, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs, Government of India, underlined at the 73rd Edition of India International Garment Fair (IIGF) on 1st July 2025, here today. Honorable Prime Minister Modi, at the last Bharat Tex, set an ambitious target of $300 billion for our textile industry, with $100 billion specifically for textile exports.
The apparel sector is a major contributor to this goal, and I'm confident that with the cooperation and contribution of every stakeholder, we will achieve this $100 billion export target.
Currently, the textile and apparel industry contributes 2.3% to India's GDP, 13% to industrial production, and accounts for 12% of our total exports. In 2023-2024 alone, we exported textile products worth $34.4 billion, with apparel accounting for 42% of that total. We are now aiming to surpass $100 billion in textile exports by 2030, a vision championed by Prime Minister Modi.
I am certain that our apparel industry's contributions will be pivotal in reaching this goal. Every MSME, entrepreneur, and exporter has a crucial role to play. Given that over 80% of India's textile sector is MSME-driven, it's vital to focus on boosting productivity, ensuring a steady supply of raw materials, and reducing import dependence to remain competitive.
Seizing Global Opportunities
The world is currently re-marking its supply chains, and India is exceptionally well-positioned to be a key player in this transformation. Our MSMEs are resilient, our exporters are quick to adapt, and our designers are continually pushing the boundaries of creativity and, importantly, sustainability.
On the trade front, as our Chairman mentioned, the India-UK Free Trade Agreement and ongoing negotiations with the EU and the United States will unlock new avenues for growth. These are high-value, quality-conscious markets, and we are committed to equipping Indian exporters with the right strategies, standards, and compliance to seize these opportunities.
Acknowledging Contributions and Looking Ahead
I extend my sincere congratulations to the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the India International Garment Fair Association, the Garment Exporters and Manufacturers Association, the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India, and the Garment Exporters Association of Rajasthan for creating a platform of such immense scale, credibility, and global relevance.
I invite all international buyers present here to not only experience the diversity and quality of Indian garments but also to embrace the spirit of a New India. And to our Indian exporters, especially our MSMEs, I urge you to dream bigger, deliver better, and leverage platforms like the IIGF as springboards for your next global leap.
Together, let's continue to stitch success stories for India's garment industry and solidify our position as a trusted partner in the global fashion value chain. You are all major contributors to our journey towards a Vikshit Bharat, as envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
