Salil Chawla, Director at DFU Publications, speaks with Sanjay Sharma, President & COO, BMD P. Ltd., on the sidelines of the PHDCCI-hosted Man-Made Fibres (MMF) Conference held in New Delhi on April 22, 2025.
Sanjay Sharma, a seasoned professional with 32 years at LNJ Group of Industries, offered a candid perspective on India’s man-made fiber (MMF) sector.
He pointed out that India’s per capita MMF consumption stands at just 3.1 kilograms—alarmingly low, even compared to some African nations—and far behind global leaders like the U.S., Germany, Australia, Korea, and China.
Sanjay stressed the urgent need to boost polyester fiber usage domestically.
On government support, he acknowledged impactful steps such as the PLI scheme and the National Textile Mission.

However, he also highlighted the challenges, particularly the high entry barriers and extended gestation periods.
Projects launched in 2025, he noted, may only bear fruit by 2029.
Sanjay underscored two critical focus areas: training and research.
With traditional textile R&D investment at a modest 2.5%, he called for a serious push toward innovation.
Despite global trade uncertainties and tariff concerns, Sanjay expressed confidence in India’s MMF potential—stressing that future success hinges on productivity, innovation, and operational excellence.
