The webinar was moderated by Dr. Vijay Yadav, Honorary Secretary of NISTI. Sankar delivered a 30-minute presentation, followed by a 5-minute corporate video from Shree Renga Polyester pvt ltd. He outlined his company’s journey in transforming PET bottle waste into recycled fibers, yarns, and garments under the Ecoline brand. Highlights included partnerships with major water companies, certifications like the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and ocean-bound plastics, and innovative products such as jackets, grow bags, acoustic board and paver blocks, all made from recycled plastic bottles.
Notably, jackets were gifted to the Indian Prime Minister, worn on international platforms, and supplied to the Siachen regiment, crafted from waste collected at high altitudes by local women employed by the army.
The presentation covered advanced recycling technologies, including mechanical and chemical processes, and addressed challenges like the 20% cost premium of recycled polyester, microplastic concerns, and the need for stronger policy support in India. Sankar also discussed global waste generation, India’s role in reducing carbon footprints, and ongoing talks with Qatar to establish a recycling plant.
The initiatives align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, emphasising reduced environmental impact and energy savings.
The webinar concluded with a vote of thanks by A.N. Bajpai, Joint Secretary of NISTI, who appreciated Mr. Sankar’s insights and the audience’s engagement. The event reinforced NISTI’s mission to advance knowledge and sustainability in the textile sector.
