Preface
The ClothTech segment of technical textiles forms the hidden foundation of the apparel and footwear industries. Beneath every garment or shoe lies an intricate network of components—threads, interlinings, zippers, buttons, elastics, labels, paddings, and moulded supports—that define the product’s comfort, durability and functionality. Though often unseen, these materials determine the performance, life and user experience of apparel and footwear alike.
Know More
In recent years, this field has undergone a rapid transformation. Advanced polymers, bio-based fibres, sustainable processing technologies and digital manufacturing have turned ClothTech from a traditional support sector into a center of material innovation. Modern sewing threads made from rPET, NFC-enabled smart labels, magnetically actuated fasteners, and shape-retaining foams are examples of how engineering, electronics and environmental responsibility now converge in this domain.
This book has been structured to reflect both the technological depth and the industrial breadth of the field.
Part I – Foundation of ClothTech outlines the material base and the fundamental relationship among comfort, functionality and durability.
Part II – Apparel Components details the construction, materials, testing and performance aspects of essential components—interlinings, threads, zippers, fasteners, elastics, labels and paddings.
Part III – Footwear Components explores textile-based structural systems such as knitted uppers, moulded reinforcements and functional linings that have redefined modern footwear engineering.
Part IV – Next-Generation ClothTech introduces eco-smart and intelligent innovations, covering recycled and bio-based inputs, sustainability certifications, digital product traceability and smart connected components.
To support entrepreneurship and applied learning, the book also includes Annexes featuring Indicative Project Reports (IPRs) for especially for MSME units, guidance on EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) implementation and practical details of footwear component assembly and integration.
The objective of this volume is to strengthen the bridge between academic study, industrial practice and innovation. It seeks to equip students, teachers, researchers and entrepreneurs with a holistic understanding of materials, processes and markets—aligned with initiatives such as the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) and ESG-based sustainability frameworks.
In essence, ClothTech is not merely a compilation of components—it reflects how material science, design and sustainability converge to create a greener, smarter, and more responsible future for the apparel and footwear industries.
Sustainable. Smart. Structural.
